Nowadays, people often use the term ‘goals’ without understanding its true significance. So, do resolutions and objectives equate to goals? What is the purpose of setting goals? Studies have demonstrated that there is a direct relationship between creating goals and being successful. When goals are properly established, it initiates new behaviours and emphasises what is essential to an individual. However, it is not simply about setting goals but also about meeting them.

What is a Goal?

Goals are usually far-reaching and can pertain to someone’s life and professional aspirations or the long-term ambitions of a company or organization. In other words, a goal is a fantasy with a time limit.

A goal is:
Your outlook for the future, and it should be the consequence of a thorough thought process of a personal mission statement and the things you want to acquire.

Your goal should be considerable in size, do not set goals that are too hard to achieve.

A goal is not an objective; while goals give an understanding of what you wish to accomplish, objectives are the steps taken to reach the goal.

5 Ways to achieve your goals easily

Your goals should be SMART:

  • Something specific that you’re passionate about.
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time-bound

1) Break them down into smaller units

As goals are usually long-term and somewhat abstract, divide them into smaller parts to make them easier to attain.

2) Have a detailed course of action

Now that you know what you are aiming for, you need to determine how to get there with a step-by-step plan.

3) Act on your plan

Goals will not be executed by themselves. Once you have a detailed plan for how to reach your objectives, it’s time to take action.

4) Always have your goal in mind and remember the end result, but take a break

To prevent exhaustion, maintain a balanced lifestyle. Step back from your plan from time to time and look at the broader picture. Show yourself kindness and allow yourself to rest.

5) Foresee bumps in the road

Have the vision to see the potential obstacles or issues that might stand in the way of your goal, and have solutions set and ready when/if they happen.
